Descriptions of Ages and Stages of Child Development

December 24th, 2010

Children develop at varying rates, so that any statements about normal child development must always be about averages. We use the age of a child to segment the course of development over time, but this too is not a hard-and-fast framework for describing child development. Some children may develop slowly in one segment, yet show above average growth in another. The ages and stages of child development, then, are always presented as averages and never as absolutes.

The ages and stages of child development framework gives us a means of determining if our children are progressing as average children do. Some descriptions hold to a three stage pattern that ranges between 0 and 5 years of age, while others describe as many as 10 stages in the same age range. Agreement between these different descriptions are fairly consistent, yet each sets somewhat different expectations. Those descriptions of ages and stages of child development that see more numerous stages than those with wider ranges may be setting less reasonable expectations. The fewer the stages, the more reasonable we can expect the description of ages and stages of child development to be, since more time is given for development. Children develop at different rates. This principle must always be kept in mind when we are referencing descriptions of ages and stages of child development to judge the development of our own children.

In a more general description of ages and stages of child development, four stages of development were presented: 0 to 18 months, 18 months to 3 years, 3 years to 5 years, and 6 years to 8. In a more discrete description, 12 stages were recognized: 0 to 29 days, month 1, month 1 to 3, month 4 to 6, month 7 to 9, month 10 to 12, month 13 to 18, month 18 to 23, 2 years to 3 years, 3 years to 4 years, 5 years to 6 years, and 7 years to 8 years. Each of these two descriptions gave the same items of development, but the one with fewer stages was not as hard and fast as the one with more stages as to when an item of development would begin and end. The one with fewer stages generally allowed more time for an item of development to occur.

When referring to descriptions of child development, a parent would probably do best to read those with broad and narrow categories, rather than to go with just one. This will allow the parent to know what specific developmental considerations occur on the average for a given month of a child’s development and yet recognize that development can span more than a narrow time slot. If the description with more categories says your child should be exhibiting a particular growth and your child is not, take a look at the more general description and see if it puts that development into a larger time frame. Of course, if both descriptions indicate your child should have achieved growth in a particular area and the child is not, see your pediatricians. The problem may only be a matter of nutrition or something that can be easily corrected.

Children grow at different rates, yet most of them come out in the end to be of average height and weight, of normal intelligence and social health. Don’t rush your child, yet don’t be remiss. Whatever their rate of growth, they’re growing at nature’s pace.

Adolescent Drug Abuse

December 24th, 2010

Adolescent coming in into a doctor’s clinic for a routine checkup often have her substance abuse problems overlooked by the doctor. Doctors just aren’t able to understand how often adolescent drug abuse occurs, and are quite unable to spot a case reasonably quickly. That’s the expert opinion in the matter. Actually, there are structured screening tools that pediatricians are supposed to use on their patients; they never do, and instead rely on gut instinct. And that usually leads them astray.

If you want to put a number on it, in a study, pediatricians were found to identify adolescent drug abuse only one out of ten times. And in cases where there was real dependence, they thought 100% of the time that the problem was limited to occasional abuse. What does this tell you? To begin with, you need to insist when you take your teenager in for a routine exam that he or she be screened properly with the structured screening tools (they are questionnaires) that they are supposed to use to identify adolescent drug abuse.

So what do these structures screening tool questionnaires actually look like? One of the most popular ones is the CRAFFT test. That’s actually an acronym (in case you didn’t guess already). The C stands for Car. They ask the adolescent to answer if they were ever in a car that was driven by someone who was high on drugs or alcohol. R stands for Relax – they ask the adolescent if they ever used alcohol or drugs to relax or to feel better about themselves or even as a social activity. A stands for Alone – does the adolescent ever used drugs or alcohol when by themselves? F stands for Forget – when they used drugs, do they forget about the things they did under the influence? F stands for Friends and Family – do they ever tell the adolescent that they have a problem with substance abuse? And finally, T stands for trouble – have they ever been in trouble for the things they did when they were under the influence?

Of course it’s easy for a young person being questioned to completely lie about their drug abuse on their CRAFFT test. But researchers find that the test gets useful results, and that’s certainly better than going on gut instinct as the doctors do now.

What Is Acupuncture?

October 30th, 2010

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves the insertion of needles into researched body points with the aim of relieving pain. It provides a therapeutic effect that gives relief to pain, pressure, and discomfort. This practice debuted 2000 years ago in China. Other countries that have embraced this form of treatment include Korea, America, and Japan among others. Some of the conditions that work best with this treatment include chemotherapy and surgery related after effects that include pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Before embarking on this treatment, it is important for people to let the practitioner know all about their past and current health in order to get the best results. Any medications being taken now must be reported to the practitioner as they may alter the efficacy of the practice. The needles used in acupuncture are solid, metallic and hair thin to reduce the effect on peoples’ skins. Many people experience no pain at all during this procedure while mild pain ahs been reported with several people. Out of this treatment, some people may feel relaxed and others energized. If the needle is not inserted properly, the patient may experience pain and soreness and that is why it must be carried out by experts.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for the regulation of the needles that are used in acupuncture in an effort to avert the risks that come with their use. These needles must be non-toxic and sterile and must carry the label ‘for single use’ to ensure that they are disposed after their use. This takes care of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis B. many side effects that have been recorded result from use of unspecialized needles and that is why using disposable ones is advocated.

Some people have suffered punctured organs as well as other infections out of an acupuncture treatment gone sour. That is why this is a preserve for professionals only to reduce such risks. Some of the benefits of acupuncture include relief from pain, few side effects, and effective in treating body disorders. This method of treatment is popular with people who are allergic to pain medications or those who have a low response to them. It is safe to use as it is natural and this makes it a favorite among many people with health conditions.

Some of the limitations of acupuncture include bruises and soreness on the skin that may hurt and bleed. Since this treatment is centered along key points, key body organs may puncture and this can even cause death. The use of unsterilised needles is risky as it exposes people to many diseases. Sometimes, the needle may break inside the body and this can cause damage especially if it is not removed. Patients with bleeding disorders may loose a lot of blood through this treatment. The treatment costs will vary with each practitioner and some may be lucky to be covered by their insurance company. Other insurance companies do not recognize acupuncture as a form of treatment and thus do not cover it.
