Can You Benefit From Chiropractic Treatments?

October 25th, 2010

You feel fine most of the time, but sometimes you have an ache in your back that you can not quite get rid of not matter how you sleep or what exercise program you try to do. You may also have a pain in your back that seems to get worse and worse, but you don’t remember doing anything that could have caused a back injury. Perhaps you have aches in other areas that make no sense to you. If you feel that something may be going on with your body alignment, you may benefit from chiropractic treatments.

Some people go through life without any type of back pain. Those are a lucky few, as the back is what takes the brunt of all that we do, and to expect that it will never be strained or in any type of pain at least once in a while is a lot to ask. The back can have minor aches and pains that go away, though we usually know what we did to cause that pain. If you start to have these pains a lot and you can not see a reason for that to happen, chiropractic treatments may be in order. You may have a small alignment problem that, once fixed, will go away.

Chiropractic treatments for those with alignment problems often go on for a few visits. Some people see relief after the very first treatment. What you should remember about chiropractic treatments is that though the relief may be felt right away, when the spine is adjusted some muscles are going to react and try to pull the spine back where it was. This is why more than one treatment and the right type of exercise to build up the back muscles helps tremendously when no major injury has occurred.

The back can go into spasm, which requires chiropractic treatments in many cases. Your doctor my not recommend that you get them, but if you are taking medications and are not getting any relief (this is very painful) and these episodes continue, chiropractic treatment may be the answer you seek. This, along with helpful medications from your doctor can clear things right up and have you feeling better in no time. Spasms feel like the end of the world, but some quite literally crawl into a chiropractic office and walk out feeling so much better after just one treatment.

If you continue to have back issues, your chiropractic treatments may not be doing all they could be doing. Most chiropractors know when they should stop treating you because something else may be going on. If a ruptured disk is a possibility, they will not do much to adjust your back because this is the one time when chiropractic treatments are only going to make things worse. They should send you for an MRI and hand your care off to your GP and a back specialist for the relief you need. They can help in many cases and some people swear by continued chiropractic care, but there are some things only surgeons can fix.

The Type Of Sleeping Pillows You Use Can Help You Get That Good Night’s Sleep

October 22nd, 2010

Millions of Americans are plagued with insomnia and intermittent sleep problems. While the causes are many, there are some common sense remedies and  tips to fall asleep that can help you get the good night’s sleep you crave. One such remedy is found in the type of sleeping pillows you choose. Let’s take a look at the variety of sleeping pillows available and how they can help solve the problems of tossing and turning, or being unable to sleep at all.

If you suffer from arthritis, you don’t need to be told that this condition can be a terrible interference in your quest for a good night’s rest. You most likely find it difficult to get in a comfortable position that doesn’t wake you up with aching joints. Arthritis in the neck can be a prominent player in preventing you from snoozing comfortably. Neck support, with the proper sleeping pillows, can make the difference between sleeping uninterrupted and waking every hour or so. As they say, this is truly a pain in the neck! So, what to do?

The natural curvature of the spine begins right at your neck. If your neck is messed up, the rest of your spine tends to follow suit. Well, here’s some good news. There are an array of sleeping pillows designed specifically to support the neck. For example, any department store, as well as thousands of online vendors, sell form-fitting foam pillows with a profile that mimics your neck in a good posture. One end provides direct support to the base of your neck, with a ‘dip’ in the middle to accommodate your head and a raised portion at the top which helps hold your head and neck in a comfortable, sleep-friendly position throughout the night. Even if you turn on your side, proper neck posture is maintained. Speaking from personal experience, my neck friendly sleeping pillows do the job. The only problem I then have is that my shoulder, sooner or later, ‘falls asleep’, waking me because my shoulder hurts, but my neck is still just fine! (Perhaps what’s needed here is a new type of all-body sleeping support system among my arsenal of things to help you sleep!)

Along the lines of this concept, goose feather down sleeping pillows can solve many a sleeping disturbance. My Grandmother was also afflicted with arthritis, but gained a great deal of relief with a couple of sumptuous goose down pillows, which afforded her with support for her head, neck and torso, allowing her to sleep through most of the night in ease.

The last of our effective remedies is the heated pillow, a clever invention of the Japanese. These pillows are somewhat like a bean-bag chair, in that they allow your body to form a precise, ‘custom’ contour in an economical and simple pillow. You can buy these (look online) or make one yourself. In oval or rectangular shapes, these natural fabric pillows are filled with rice, heated in the microwave and placed under your neck. The rice filling conforms perfectly to the contours of your neck, while adding the soothing warmth to help relax the muscles in your neck and upper back.

If you’re looking for a good night’s rest, now is the time to take inventory of your sleeping pillows! Try one of these solutions or even an anti snore pillow and it just might help you sleep through the night, waking refreshed and exuberant for tomorrow’s activities!

Is a Weight Problem One of The Stress Symptoms?

October 21st, 2010

Some people just suffer from never-ending stress. It’s just the way they are. Of all the troubling symptoms that stress can be responsible for, making you gain weight and aging you quicker have to be the most difficult to cope with. If you are always feeling the stress of life’s challenges, and you find that all you can expect to see at the end of the tunnel are more distressing situations, your body experiences this as much as you do. And it reacts by taking up your muscle, eating it up and using the raw materials contained in there to add extra sugar in your blood. When this happens, insulin, which happens to be a fat- storing hormone too, in addition to being the one that helps digest sugar, rushes to filter out all the blood sugar it sees to turn it into a love handle. And of course, with very little sugar left in your blood, you’ll feel hunger pangs. See how weight is one of the clearest stress symptoms out there now?

There are other stress symptoms that you can have measured in a the blood test that can make it difficult for you to lose weight too. A sressful life can make your body resistant to the effects of insulin and leptin. Leptin is a hormone gets you to stop feeling hungry when you’ve had enough to eat. See where this is heading? When your body becomes resistant to leptin because of stress, you never know when to stop eating. The entire effect of stress contributes to helping you pack those pounds around your waist and it makes it difficult for you to burn them off.

There are other weight-related symptoms that point to a stressful lifestyle too. Testosterone and DHEA are two hormones that help you burn off fat, that help you build muscle and give you a great sex drive. A blood test can show you how healthy your body’s levels are of these hormones. Low levels can be stress symptoms you need to pay attention to. When your body’s supply of these hormones sink, it shows that your body is no longer paying as much attention as it should to the production of these hormones. It’s completely preoccupied with producing hormones like cortisol that your body needs to deal with a stressful lifestyle.

Fatigue, depression, PMS and immune dysfunction are all stress symptoms. Rather, these are symptoms of stress that has gotten out of hand for far too long. When it comes to this, no matter how much you exercise, there’ll be just no way you can lose weight without paying attention to your stressful lifestle first. In fact, your body will slow down your metabolism when you do that, and make you even fatter. The message is clear – destress! It’s the only thing that can help you lose those pounds.
