How to Play 9 Ball Pool

August 2nd, 2011

Although 8 ball is the most widely played pool game throughout the world, 9 ball definitely comes in second. If you were to rank which is played in tournaments more then 9 ball would likely be the winner. The main reason 9 ball is used more for tournament play is the speed of play that it provides thus making it easier to hold tournaments. So let’s take a look at how 9 ball is being played.

Racking 9 ball is quite easy. If you have your own indoor or outdoor pool table at your home I suggest having both an 8 ball and 9 ball rack to go with your table. If you are playing at a bar or pool hall they may or may not have a 9 ball rack. If you do own a pool table you can pick up a 9 ball rack anywhere they have pool tables for sale or, anywhere where pool table accessories are sold. Set the 9 ball rack on the table and place the 1 ball at the head (top) of the rack. The 2 ball goes at the bottom of the rack and the 9 ball in the middle. The rest of the object balls numbered 3,4,5,6,7,8 go around the 9 ball in the center. The 9 ball rack will make it quite easy to place the object balls and rack them tightly. You can use an 8 ball rack for racking 9 ball but more often than not the rack won’t end up as tight as with a 9 ball rack. Alright on to the break and rules of play.

One person opens up play by breaking the racked balls. The person breaking must hit the lowest numbered ball on the break (hence why the 1 ball is placed at the head of the rack). The cue ball or an object ball must hit a rail or be pocketed in order for the shot to be legal. If a ball is pocketed the player may shoot again. The player must strike the lowest numbered ball remaining on the table first, however may pocket any ball on the table as long as the lowest is struck first. Shots do not have to be called. If a foul is committed primarily scratching, knocking a ball off the table, or not striking the lowest numbered ball first, the opponent gets ball in hand. One push out may be called immediately after the break by the player at the table. The player pushes the cue ball to any part of the table not having to hit the lowest numbered object ball remaining. The opponent has the choice to either play the table or give it back to the person who pushed.

The first player to sink the 9 ball wins the game. As long as you strike the lowest numbered ball first the 9 ball may enter any pocket resulting in a win. If all numbered balls have been pocketed on the table leaving the 9 then the player shoots directly at the 9 ball and wins by pocketing it in any one of the 6 pockets on the table.

Playing 9 ball is a fun and fast way to play pool. These basic rules are easy to follow if you would like to give 9 ball a try.

Owning a Model Gun Collection

October 4th, 2010

A popular and growing hobby is collecting model guns. If you are a serious collector, you would find that it will be very expensive to add an authentic antique gun to your collection. Collecting firearms as a hobby is influenced by the collector’s preference for a particular type or style of guns. A person who wants to add a period piece from the colonial times might find it not only difficult to find a good piece but it might also be too expensive to be affordable. A model gun can give a collector great satisfaction because it is a perfect copy of the real thing with only this one difference – it cannot be fired!

Also, these replicas are affordably priced. This makes it possible for those who crave to have a collection of antique military firearms or guns of varying styles, but have to work with a small budget, to enjoy their hobby. Models which are exquisite copies of pistols and flintlocks used by the cavalry, navy and infantry during the civil war are available in mint condition. Models of modern guns are also available. These exact replicas of antique firearms save the collector form having to look for them in antique shops or pawn shops. They will not have to attend estate sales in their search for antique fire arms in good condition. Quite often a collector looking for original period pieces might find that what is available is damaged, with missing parts or has other problems that reduce its value. Manufacturers of model forearms pay close attention to detail and make sure that the replica is faithful to the original in every detail.

These days there are collectors who only collect model guns and blank guns. The internet is an excellent place to look for model guns. Another reason why collectors of replica guns are keen on their hobby is that they can have models of guns used through out American military history. They can also add to their collection replicas of firearms used in World War II, including a Napoleon double-barreled pistol.

Because model guns are available at affordable prices collectors of firearms can fully enjoy their hobby.

Cutting Strokes With a Golf GPS Unit

August 24th, 2010

On the surface it would appear that golf is a simple game. Hit the ball into the little round hole and the player who does it in the fewest strokes wins. Regular golfers realize, however, that golf is an ever evolving sport. The clubs have become lighter and easier to swing. Course design has become more elaborate, with unique quirks built into many of the newer courses. Golf equipment companies are always at work designing new products that can help to improve a player’s game. If you’ve been playing the game for awhile it may seem hard to keep up sometimes.

One such technology that been surging in popularity is the golf GPS unit. These devices help players keep track of their location and provide distances to various features. A golf course GPS is useful when you want to know which club is right for a given situation and when you want to avoid traps and hazards that lay in wait. They also come with an electronic scorecard, so you can keep score without needing to carry a pen or pencil around with you. These units are typically easy to learn to use, although veteran golfers often avoid them as they are more of a luxury than a necessity. Still, if you struggle with club selection they can be quite beneficial.

Perhaps a more affordable technology is the LDP golf ball. These balls were introduced several years ago by TaylorMade and use an adjusted dimple pattern that make the balls more aerodynamic and promote further distance on shots. With these balls it is no longer necessary to use perfect mechanics when you shoot. The balls have a larger sweet-spot, making it easier to get the ball in the air. If you have a sloppy shot you’ll still want to improve your swing to reach your full potential, but these balls can certainly make the game a lot easier and less frustrating.

Whether you are a tech savvy golfer with a brand new Callaway uPro and high-tech golf cleats, or a grizzled vet who prefers to stick to the basics, you can appreciate the changes that have taken place in the sport over the years. It’s always interesting to contemplate what types of changes will take place in the decades to come.
