Making Your Own Waterless Shampoo

July 9th, 2010

If you have ever looked in the mirror just before heading out the door and noticed that your hair looks like a grease pit, you probably wondered what you could do about it. If a shower isn’t an option, you don’t have to just shrug it off and hope no one notices. When you don’t have time to jump in the shower and wash or dry your hair, there is a great solution for making it look less greasy: a homemade powder shampoo.

Although it is fairly easy to find commercial hair powders in stores, they can be very overpriced when you consider the ingredients. In fact, you probably already have everything you need at home and if not, you will not spend very much money getting the ingredients. Buying one may be more convenient but if it’s a true emergency, you may not have the luxury of time. The main component of many hair powders on the market is cornstarch.

If you are looking for something very simple, you really only need to shake on a bit of cornstarch. Place some in a shaker bottle if possible and slowly shake it onto your hair toward the roots. Then comb it through until the white color has disappeared. Start with a little bit and then keep adding more until your hair no longer looks greasy, being careful not to overdo it or your hair could turn white from the cornstarch. If you don’t have a shaker bottle, you will have to apply it very carefully using your fingertips and sort of massage it into the scalp.

A lot of store-bought renditions also leave behind a freshening scent and this is something you can do as well by adding some scented powder into you cornstarch. Many fragrance sets come with powders so you can actually match it to your perfume if you want. If you don’t have any powder on hand, you can simply spray your hair with a perfume or body spray afterward to give it a fresh scent.

By making your own waterless shampoo, you can help oily hair look a lot cleaner. Of course it isn’t a substitute for washing hair completely but it’s a great way to put off a real washing for another day or two when you’re short on time. Now that you know how to make dry shampoo, you don’t have to apologize for your hair when running into an old friend at the store- just throw in some powder and you’ll be good to go!
